The reality of the gender pay gap, even further ex The reality of the gender pay gap, even further exacerbated across race, means that Indigenous, Black, newcomer and racialized women are most likely to earn less than men in similar jobs, are most likely to be minimum wage earners in BC, and are most likely to retire with smaller pensions in older age which cements a lifetime of the racial feminization of poverty.

That’s why we’re one of over 125 organizations and advocates to have signed an open letter calling on the BC Government to enact pay equity legislation.

BC needs to enact pay equity legislation now! Read the open letter + add your voice with the links in our bio. #BCPayEquity #Bcpoli #PayEquity

📣 BIG NEWS‼️ On February 23, BC Minister o 📣 BIG NEWS‼️

On February 23, BC Minister of Labour Harry Bains announced that the BC provincial government will be increasing the Employment Standards Branch’s operating budget by nearly $12 million over three years to hire as many as 33 more full-time employees in response to the growing demand for its services.

What will this change?

Over the past few years, demand for the services at the branch has risen steadily due to a growing workforce, employment issues related to the pandemic and a surge of employers seeking to register before hiring temporary foreign workers.

Hiring more staff will work to shorten wait times and increase proactive investigations to resolve disputes between workers and employers, provide guidance on B.C.’s employment standards, and process employer registrations for temporary foreign workers.

Where do we go from here?

The Worker Solidarity Network welcomes this great news and are delighted that the B.C government are responding to workers needs.

With this funding, we are calling for accountability procedures that will give workers the justice they have long deserved, such as: proper investigations of workplaces with multiple complaints, specifying deadlines for the resolution of complaints, and transparency in budget allocation.
